I first met fiery redhead Shourouk Rhaiem in Paris a few years ago when I was doing a story on young French jewellers breaking away from traditional design. Since then she has become a favourite with designers and celebrities –and has worked with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Chanel.
Even though she was born and raised in Paris, Shourouk cites her Tunisian heritage and more specifically the embroideries on Tunisian wedding garments as a source of inspiration for her handmade jewellery. Her pieces are made using fabric and sequin embroideries punctuated with crystals in different colours. The result is a line of accessories that are high-fashion, but still hip, modern and above all fun, thanks to her quirky colour combinations and motifs. Best of all they are versatile and look great with a black cocktail dress or a simple T-shirt and jeans.
Since then I have bought a few pieces including her signature pearl necklace with a bird motif. For the spring, I have my eye on the neon cuff and earrings (perfect for this season’s colour trend) and the show-stopping sequin and crystal necklace punctuated with fun colours.
Prices range from HK$3,300 to HK$11,000.
