Head-to-toe denim can look super stylish or horribly wrong. This season’s styles also come in lighter colours, so you can run the risk of looking like a bad Calvin Klein advert. For the best example of how to pair denim with denim, check out Derek Lam’s spring/summer runway show (above right) where the designer paired tailored separates such as a ruffled blouse or jacket, with wide legged denim trousers. His colour combinations were spot on – not too light, and not too dark – giving his models a perfectly sophisticated look. Stella McCartney (above left) achieved a similar look with a more casual vibe.
If that doesn’t work, invest in a structured dress or lightweight shirt. Instead of thick denim, choose pieces made from chambray – a lightweight cotton which looks like denim – that drapes well on the body and is comfortable to wear. A tailored chambray shirt will match anything, while a button down dress worn with a brown leather belt will look cool yet hip. And don’t forget to buy a pair of jeans. This season’s must-have style is a pair of tailored bell bottoms. We love J brand’s Love Story.
