LisaT embroidered kaftan with side slits and Tabla Kite classic top (HK$2,980)
While we are on the topic of swimwear (and I am at the beach) , I thought it would be a good time to write about coverup options. First an foremost, I am not a fan of floor length kaftans. They only look good on super-tall skinny woman and make me break out in a sweat (literally). I also am not one for OTT Miami styles with lots of heavy crystals and gharish prints. For me (and Phoebe Philo) less is more…
One of my top styles this summer are short tunics with wide sleeves. They are way more flattering than maxi styles and can also be worn off the beach. The trick is to choose a style that is loose but made from fluid fabric so that it skims the body in a flattering way.
Also indispensible are tube dresses. They are easy to wear and great for the poolside because they slip on and off. I have this black tube dress that can be worn as a dress, long or short, or as a skirt. What’s not to love? Jumpsuits are very trendy right now but I find them too complicated for the beach or poolside – save them for nights out instead. I’ve also noticed a trend for open jackets. Think of a long sleeved cardigan but in a sheer fabric and that covers your bum. They have a chic St Tropez vibe that I love.
Once you have chosen your perfect style, its all about fabric and details. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, forget synthetics (polyester should be banned!) and get breathable fabrics such as linen, silk and cotton. With details I think understated is best – try an abstract tropical inspired print or something in a bright block colour. I have also seen some great experiments with embroidery on top of print, but make sure the colours are complimentary or you will look a mess.
Above and below are my top picks from two of my favourite brands, Tabla and LisaT Spa.
Tabla Tropez jacket (HK$3,680) and LisaT elasticated tube dress (HK$2,100)
