Handbags may be having a “Phoebe Philo” moment, but I have always been a fan of the simple yet classic clutch. That being said, finding the perfect one has been hard. I love my Yves Saint Laurent Y clutch but it’s turning into an expensive habit because I keep buying the new permutations every season (I am eyeing the black and white style next). I am also particularly obsessed with Christopher Kane’s Water clutch but again, am not sure how cool it will look three years down the line.
Which brings me to Central Saint Martin’s graduate Lizzy Disney. I first read about her in a magazine and instantly loved the look of her sleek yet minimalist envelope bag which features a long shoulder strap and gold knob closure (there’s minimal hardware on the bag). Admittedly, the design is not groundbreaking, but for me it’s all about the leather – it’s thick and sturdy, which is the opposite of the supersoft lambskin that is so popular right now. It reminds of the saddle leather Hermes used to use in the old days. And there’s a rawness to it that I like, and it will also age beautifully.
I ordered a black version (it’s reasonably priced at 243 pounds sterling) and am already lusting after the beige or red style. Each bag is handmade so expect a few imperfections, but that’s the beauty of it, isn’t it?
