Collaborations are a dime a dozen in the fashion world, but good ones are hard to come by especially when everyone and their dog are jumping on the bandwagon. While we still have to wait for Missoni for Target and Versace for H&M to arrive in stores (the less said about the latter, the better), the Maison Martin Margiela collection for Opening Ceremony has finally hit Hong Kong at a special pop up store at I.T.
When it was announced earlier this year that the usually low-key brand (under the more casual MM6 line) was working on an exclusive line for the hip retailer most people were surprised. But the brand is no longer elusive as it used to be as the man himself has jumped ship and left behind a team of technicians that are lending their talents to everything (read about the newly opened Margiela hotel in Paris here).
Fortunately the new line has whiffs of vintage Margiela that fans will love. There are about 20 styles all based on the brand’s signature transformation and deconstruction concepts. Each item is multi-functional and made up of two to three different pieces that can be worn together or apart. For example, a sleeveless grey turtle neck dress comes with a detachable long sleeve black lining, while a knit jacket has a removable vest. There are also the usual tricks – trompe l’oeil effects as seen in the sleeveless nude cocktail dress with a contrasting black ribbed-jersey knit turtleneck collar and trim. I love the jackets because you can wear them in winter or summer thanks to removable vests or linings.
The accessories are also super cool – ankle boots transform into knee-highs and a leather handbag features two detachable pouches on the front. Nothing like getting two (or three) styles for the price of one.
In true Margiela style, the palette is basic (black, grey, white) but accented with red and khaki.
Prices range from HK$1,699 to $13,599. Find the pop-up store at I.T Hysan One, One Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, tel: +852 2890 7012. The line is also available online at www.shopbop.com
