Autumn Checklist: Top 10 fashion must-haves

Must-haves include (from top left, clockwise): Chloe’s snakeskin prints, Chanel’s red Boy handbag, Altuzarra’s parka and Celine loafers.

Hello autumn! By now you must be overloaded with information about the top trends for next season. As usual, the list is so long and varied that you may as well buy an entirely new wardrobe in the process. For those of you who don’t have that luxury (including yours truly), I’ve narrowed it down to 10 pieces you should invest that will last you through to March. Happy Shopping!

 1. A cool sweater

A fitted chunky knit creates a stylish Alpine look. Play around with vibrant colours as seen at Jil Sander or unusual shapes, such as Givenchy’s rounded shoulders. Knitted tunics were another popular look.

 2. A 1960s-style mod shift dress

Everyone had their own version of this on the catwalks from sleek styles at Celine and Jean Paul Gaultier to low-waisted looks at Yves Saint Laurent and Prada. Accessorize with knee high boots for the ultimate Twiggy tribute.

 3. Anything python

While leopard print will always have its place in my closet, autumn is all about python. This luxe skin covered shoes and other accessories, most of the time in vibrant shades. If you can’t afford it, try a python print as championed by Chloe.

 4. A furry coverup

Before you call PETA on me, I am not suggesting you buy the real thing. There were plenty of fuzzy 1970s inspired cover-ups on the catwalks made from animal-friendly fabrics such as shearling and Mongolian lamb. Take your pick - but if you look like Cousin It, you’ve gone too far.

5. Black trousers

The Androgynous look is always popular. And while most women already have a beautifully tailored blazer, the same cannot be said for a well-cut pair of black trousers. The best thing is that these trousers will last you a lifetime so make sure you choose a flattering cut (I am all about the wide-legged).

More essentials from (left to right): Ralph Lauren, Jil Sander, Alexander Wang and Prada

6. A pair of loafers

I am totally regretting throwing away my Gucci loafers (circa Tom Ford) because they are back again with a vengeance. Some styles are dainty with pointed toes and kitten heels, but I prefer a chunky style with block heels and tassled front.

 7. A parka

Forget the cape, the utilitarian parka is autumn’s essential coverup. Choose from street-inspired styles with plenty of zippers or more luxe versions made from cashmere and with fur lined hoodies. Wear it with a flirty dress or sleek wide legged trousers to make a statement.

 8. A leather coverup or dress

It was all about S&M at Louis Vuitton with its sexy, bondage inspired collection. While leather corsets may not be for everyone, you can pull of the look with a cool leather top, dress or trench coat. A tight pencil skirt also does the trick.

 9. A printed item

While ornate digital prints are still de rigeur, top of the list are polka dots, Navajo prints, houndstooth or anything with checks as seen at Prada. If you really want to make a statement opt for Givenchy’s cool panther, although it will soon be replaced next season!

10. A red handbag

It’s this season’s hottest colour, so why not buy a new handbag in this rich shade and kill two birds with one stone?
