Eye This: Joan von Holdefer Jewellery

Highlights from the collection include (from top left, clockwise): Evil Eye necklace, Camellia earrings, Evil Eye bracelet and Cross earrings.

While most women can’t resist diamonds, chunky diamond jewellery offends me. I much prefer pieces that are more subtle and delicate, which brings me to my latest find, Joan von Holdefer’s jewellery. Born and bred in Los Angeles (my second home!) she started dabbling with design in 2003 and created a line of handbags and accessories, before moving to Hong Kong a year later. In 2009, she started working on her eponymous jewellery line which she officially launched last year in Paris.

“I couldn’t find designs I wanted so decided to make some myself. I was originally inspired by my grandmother’s collection of vintage insect brooches but wanted to make them cool and modern. I like simple elegance. My pieces are very delicate yet the designs are very strong and all original,” she says.

Her debut line, Enchanted Garden was inspired by nature and features whimsical enterwined snakes, bees, butterflies and her signature bat in 18K gold and diamonds and sapphires. Then there’s the Love collection which includes a must-have modern rendition of the Evil Eye which resembles an intricate spider web made from diamonds and gold, and hanging from a delicate thin chain.  It’s also available in a chic bracelet that I have my eye on.

Tomorrow she will be making her Hong Kong debut exclusively at local boutique Nude is Rude along with her latest collection Favs, which features classic pieces that can be worn time and time again. There is the clover, camellia and cross earrings and pendants. All of her designs reference vintage jewellery making them modern heirlooms.

Attend Joan von Holdefer’s exclusive trunk show tomorrow (September 15th 2011) from 6pm to 9pm at Nude is Rude, G/F, no. 7 Lan Kwai Fong, Central and receive a special 10 per cent discount that evening only. Prices range from HK$3,000 to HK$18,000. RSVP essential: neelam@purebuzz.hk
