Gianvito Rossi: The New Shoe-Man in Town

Gianvito Rossi Spring/Summer 2012 collection

The past few years has seen On Lan Street in Central transform into shoe heaven. First there was Christian Louboutin, closely followed by Rupert Sanderson. The latest to arrive is Gianvito Rossi, a new brand from Italy that has opened its first Asian outpost in our fashion-obsessed city.

I first heard about the brand through a friend of mine in Paris a few months ago. Turns out that Gianvito is actually the son of legendary Italian shoemaker Sergio Rossi, which immediately piqued my interest. Last week I finally got a chance to visit the boutique which at the moment is stocking the spring/summer 2012 collection.

While the brand was launched in 2007, it has only now started to make headlines thanks to its collaboration with “it” designer Joseph Altuzarra and fans such as Reese Witherspoon, Kylie Minogue and Mary-Kate Olsen. Gianvito actually trained with the best having worked alongside his father for 20 years before deciding to branch out on his own. As a result the line reminds me of Sergio Rossi with its emphasis on handcrafted Italian leathers and shoes that are hand made in family-run factories. Nothing is mass produced giving it a real feel of luxury.

While the brand is not as sexy as Louboutin or quintessentially chic as Sanderson, it has its own feminine spin that women will like. The spring/summer collection is inspired by snakes and spiders with seductive styles featuring web patterns, woven mesh and sexy criss-crossing straps that wrap around the foot. The brand’s look is all about hidden details so expect simple and pure shapes with edgy accents including plexi-glass heels, pearl studded heels and hologram finishings. Also check out his signature Carbon collection, featuring ultra-light carbon fibre soles for the ultimate luxury-meets-technology style statement. Prices start at around HK$6,000.

Gianvito Rossi is at Shop B, Ground Floor, Galuxe Building, 8-10 On Lan Street, Central, Hong Kong, tel: +852 2522 4001, www.gianvitorossi.com
