Ellery Resort collection (above)
While the fashion world tends to ignore what’s happening over in Australia (ah hello, they are a season behind), I am always impressed by their local designers. This is, after all, the country that gave birth to Sass & Bide and Willow.
Our latest find is hip brand Ellery, which has been spotted on celebrities like Nicole Richie, Georgia Jagger and Eva Mendes. Lucky for us, the brand will also be hosting a trunk show tomorrow and Saturday (July 13 and 14) in Hong Kong, so you can see the designs up close.
The brand was founded in 2007 by Perth native Kym Ellery, who honed her skills at Central Saint Martin’s in London and later at avant garde Australian magazine Russh. She’s quickly created buzz thanks to her clean, structured silhouettes that remind me of Balenciaga-meets-Celine. That being said, everything has a feminine twist that makes it all the more wearable.
Her latest resort collection features voluminous yet tailored shoulders and other architectural shapes including strapless dresses with a hidden corset. Jackets including a chic peplum style comes in contrasting fabrics. The colour palette is super chic with shades of dark green, red, nude and silver but what really stands out is the fabrics – silk organza and wool mixes with glitter tulle, plastic linen, lame (which appears on cool sci-fi shorts) and stiff broderie anglaise, for a futuristic touch. Draping and baroque black and white prints add femininity.
