Summer styles from top left (clockwise): Christian Louboutin, Tom Ford, Gianvito Rossi, Loffler Randall and Sam Edelman
This season is all about making a statement with your shoes. Forget summery espadrilles, because it’s all about attention grabbing styles that make or break your outfit. But a word of advice: If you are going to go wild with your footwear, make sure you keep your outfit simple so your shoes can really steal the attention. Here are my five must-have shoe styles this summer.
In this heat, sandals are essential. But just because they are simple, it doesn’t mean they have be boring. Braided styles have made a comeback in bright colours, and match perfectly with this season’s ethnic trend. Pair them with coloured denim and breezy white top, and you’re good to go.
Top pick: Loeffler Randall Filippa Mignon Flat Sandal
I’m all about neon this summer and so is every other designer from Christian Louboutin to Pierre Hardy. Because neon tends to border on casual/sporty, opt for more formal styles such as pointy toe pumps. Just remember, neon goes with everything – except neon.
Top pick: Christian Louboutin neon yellow pumps (available at On Pedder, New World Tower, Queen’s Road Central, Hong Kong, tel: +852 2118 3489)
Now that the sun is shining, its time to bring out the bling. Wearing metallic shoes can be tricky – too much can look tacky. Go for mirrored leather styles or textured fabrics to tone down the look. Or take cues from Louis Vuitton, and choose a pair of pumps with a gold toe cap – it’s the perfect accent.
Top pick: Gianvito Rossi Calfskin Mirror Pointy Pumps
Geometric-inspired styles have been seen on and off the runway this season – in fact many of the heel shapes resemble works of art. It’s all about picking a style with the right balance, clean lines and balanced proportions. Details should be kept to a minimum, so the shape grabs all the attention.
Top pick: Tom Ford red velvet wedges (available at Tom Ford stores including IFC Mall, Central, Hong Kong, tel:+852 2234 7802).
It was only a matter of time before colourblocking made its way down to our feet. Designers have taken the look to a new level by combining two to three bright shades on everything from sandals to trainers (thank you Isabel Marant). Just choose your combinations wisely – if you are unsure, pick a style that mixes in a neutral tone such as black or white.
Top pick: Sam Edelman Gigi leather flats
