Denim on the runways of (from left to right): DSquared, Michael Bastian, Band of Outsiders and DSquared
I have always been a denim fanatic – I have nearly 300 pairs from authentic vintage pieces I have collected over the years to the must-haves each season. Having worked for the inventor of denim, Levi Strauss & Co, has only added to my appreciation of this fabric. Jeans after all, embody the spirit of youth. It’s easily the most versatile piece of clothing in our wardrobes and it’s essential to build on what you have every season.
As we now move into autumn/winter, I wanted to share my must-have looks, as well as some tips on how to wear them.
The Dark Knight
Denim this season is crisp, rich and urban with shades ranging from dark blue to deep black. This look has an old school rock ‘n’ roll vibe, especially the washed styles which are great for city living. In terms of shape, skinnies, slouched skinnies and slouched tapered turn-ups still dominate. DSquared have created a great collection which is spot on. Nudie also makes amazing dark skinnies that wash beautifully over time.
The Urban Wanderer
Vintage inspired denims are teamed with classic utility, military and outdoor pieces to create a new take on workwear. The look is tough, rugged and very masculine while being sophisticated and modern. Match these styles with a muted color palette. Denim by Cycle has anchored its entire season on this look and I love it.
Top denim picks (from top left clockwise): Alexander McQueen, Eternal, G-star and Levi’s
Update your stuffy winter suits by wearing a chambray or washed denim shirt. Crisp and clean styles worn with washed denim rocks. Have fun with patterned, striped or coloured ties and bow ties. Play with texture, prints and patterned washes as well if you are more adventurous.
The Essential Trucker
Available in classic and modern fits, the new trucker is snug and short. Wear them as inner layers for the winter or to create the denim on denim look as well.
Denim on Denim
It may be old school but this look still works. Just ensure the tones you choose are very close if not the same. Bring in some colour through accessories or by adding a few cowboy details to make it now and relevant (see Levis for tips).
Match it with
Brogues. Handcrafted styles especially with colour create a cool hipster look. Oversized shoes, high tops and a bit of bling may seem very 1990s but still work.
