Those of you who love jewellery will definitely recognise Plukka.com. This online jewellery brand and ecommerce site isn’t new, but it continues to grab headlines and pop up all over the internet. Last week they held a trunk show to launch their international store, so I decided to check it out.
Plukka is headquartered in Hong Kong and is the brainchild of the extremely talented and ambitious Joanne Ooi (also the former creative director at Shanghai Tang). The site offers a wide selection of fine jewellery designed by an in-house team made from 18k gold, diamonds and other precious materials. What makes its different, however, is how it works. Plukka uses a group buying model so that the more people that want to buy an item, the lower the price becomes. Once a minimum is reached, the item goes into production and your bling arrives in one to four weeks. Prices are usually 70-90 per cent off retail and range between US$190 to US$6,000.
While the concept is fun and innovative, my concern was the quality. I am all up for shopping online but when it comes to fine jewellery I always like to see what I am getting in person, hence my visit to the trunk show.
Selection of rings
To say I was impressed was an understatement. The selection of designs they offer are mind blowing with styles running the gamut from classic to edgy (they add around 150 products each month). There is something for everyone from sliced diamond bracelets to rose cut diamond hoops and funky bullet rings made from gold.
Favourites include the very chic Glamourai ring featuring two diamond bands connected by a thin chain. The Razor Mittens range features pyramid bangles studded with black spinels while the Fausto earrings remind me of vintage Art Deco pieces I often see in Paris. Everything is custom made in limited quantities – what more could a girl want? I’m sold.
