Awards season has arrived and with it comes a series of superficial but secretly fun postings that scrutinize every celebrity’s fashion sense (fashion can be so bitchy, but we love it…)
First up is the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which was held last night in Los Angeles. One of the most surprising trends of the evening was white (in Asia it would mean that the attendees were in mourning, but I digress) as well as red, which appeared in various shades including tango orange (on Jessica Alba, who looked like she spent too long on a sun bed) and coral (Zoey Deschanel).
Angelina Jolie obviously left an impression after last year’s Oscars as many celebrities donned gowns with thigh high slits while halter dresses (Claire Danes in Versace) and sheer fabrics were other big trends. In keeping with spring’s love for embellishment, there was also plenty of gold embroidery, which added a couture touch. My favourite trend of the night was the return of the long sleeve dress –covering up looks so much more elegant and understated.
So without further adieu here are our Hits and Misses of the evening…
Having Tom Ford on speed dial paid off for Julianne Moore who looked very chic in this montone (trend alert!) gown with a slimming white panel at the waist. Kate Hudson also opted for a long sleeved gown (Alexander McQueen) but the sexy keyhole detail and sequin embroideries at the neck and waist add a high fashion edge. Also going for gold was Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey who chose a white Alexandre Vauthier gown – who knew Lady Mary could be so edgy? I loved the rich burgundy shade of Naomi Watts’ Zac Posen gown, which fit her like a glove (extra points for going backless). Also giving sexy back was Julianna Margulies in a sheer lace beaded Emilio Pucci gown. Helen Mirren wore a stunning gold and black Badgley Mischka gown while Amy Poehler rocked the red carpet in a chic black tuxedo.
Note to Eva Longoria – not matter how high your heels, a thigh high slit will always make you look dumpy. With all that black and heavy makeup she reminded me of a drag queen. Rachel Weisz was equally underwhelming in a sheer, polka dot Louis Vuitton get up that looked like it was two different dresses sewn together.
Granny florals and cropped tops are definitely not a winning combination, Sienna Miller. Lucy Liu’s floral Carolina Herrera gown brought to mind that scene from The Sound of Music when Maria makes dresses for the Von Trapp kids using old floral curtains. And don’t get me started on Nicole Kidman – everything was wrong from the Desperate Housewives hair to the weird, sheer paneling at her midriff. It’s McQueen for chrissakes! Halle Berry was showing way too much skin while the print on her dress seemed dated.
Who were your hits and misses?
