Queen of Hearts by Papeete

The summer holidays have officially begun and it’s time to update your swimwear. One item you need to invest in is a chic one piece (preferably in black) that can take you from poolside to dinner. And while you can’t beat tried and tested brands like Eres and Norma Kamali, this season has plenty of new names including Canadian designer Beth Richards who is known for her sporty yet chic ensembles.

Interestingly, I recently discovered two swimwear labels designed by Chinese designers. While one is based in Hong Kong and the other in New York, their designs have an international appeal while suiting the Asian figure. Read on to find out more…

Alice in Red by Papeete

Papeete was founded last year by Lulu Zhang and Jen Choi, two fashionistas who recently moved back to Hong Kong after studying abroad. Frustrated by the limited swimwear choices in the city, they launched their own line, which they describe as elegant and bold, but still practical. The collection is made with Italian fabrics and the styles are all about accentuating a woman’s curves so expect details such as cut outs and colour blocking. Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, highlights include the sexy Alice in Red, a chic one piece with a flattering sweetheart neckline and contrasting black side panels. The sporty Queen of Hearts is given a sexy twist with flattering cut outs.

Sleek styles from Estuaries (above)

If you are all about urban minimalism, then Estuaries is for you. It was founded in 2011 by two sisters Layla and Zhu Ru, who were born in China and grew up in Hawaii.  Now based in New York, the brand is all about clean lines, subtle details and cool fabric combinations.  Versatility is key, with many of the styles doubling up as regular clothing that can match easily with your current wardrobe. Standouts include the Seine bikini with its modern cut and mesh overlay and the Hudson, a one piece which reminds me of a playsuit with its boy shorts and jumpsuit details.   There is also a small collection of resort wear that includes cover ups, wraps and casual pieces.
