New season, new shoes. Before I embark on my usual round of fashion weeks, I always purchase new shoes. My needs are simple – it has to be classic and chic, but come with a cool fashion twist that people will notice. Roger Viver’s new Virgule (or Comma) heel ticks all the boxes. Plus I am sure it will become even more iconic than its buckle style.
Roger Vivier himself was considered an innovator and pioneer in the shoemaking industry. He viewed shoes as modern sculptures or works of art. He actually designed the Virgule, a simple pump with a sleek curved heel, for his own brand in 1963. This season, Vivier’s current creative director Bruno Frisoni has taken this classic and given it his own modern spin although the core DNA remains intact. To coincide with the launch Vivier has also collaborated with New York based photographer Olivia Bee and Atlanta Taylor (daughter of Duran Duran bassist John Taylor) on a very cool photo shoot.
But back to the shoes. There are several styles to choose from, and most models are available in two heel heights – 75mm and 110mm. Honestly, they are all so chic I can’t decide on which one I want. The houndstooth version is top of the list – the print is huge this season and it comes in calf hair which makes it all the more modern. The green satin style is perfect for fashionistas. The mirrored silver leather pump is cool and futuristic. But the one I have finally settled on? The understated black pump with a mirrored silver heel.
