There are few brands out there who still insist that their shoes are made the old fashioned way, but Tod’s is one of them. They are, after all, a brand who made their name with beautifully crafted styles like the Gommino.
The art of shoemaking is taken to new heights with their latest project, Sartorial Touch, which features an exclusive capsule collection of men’s shoes and bags made by hand from start to finish.
Each pair of shoes is made using a technique that dates back to the 1920s and that has been handed down over generations. The painstaking method involves a two-step process where the leather is treated with a special cream, and then dried for 48 hours before a second layer is applied. The final result is a range of shoes with a vintage-inspired patina with added depth and shine. Each item comes inscribed with the word “J.P. Tods,” like a badge of honour proclaiming its unique character. There are six shoe styles available including the gommino, ankle boot, monk strap, moccasin, wing tip and lace-up.
For now the line is only available in Milan, but it’s definitely worth a visit. Housed in Tod’s flagship Via Spiga boutique, customers need to visit a specially dedicated floor which is only accessible via a glass elevator. This opens into an intimate gentleman’s club where you can enjoy a whisky before you starting browsing. In addition to shoes, there are selected bag styles from the double stripe family available.
Here’s hoping the next stop is Asia…
