I am not usually one to fawn over fashion images but I am loving David La Chapelle’s whimsical and surprising collaboration with Tod’s.
Tod’s usually embraces the more classic and traditional route when it comes to their imagery, but their new Sella bag marks a new turn for the house (they recently launched a ready-to-wear collection by ex-Valentino designer Alessandra Facchinetti that proves their more modern and fresh direction).
But back to the La Chapelle images. The photographer brings their new Sella bag to life with images that are surreal and playful, while referencing bag’s equestrian influence both literally and figuratively.
While each image depicts a different scene, the colours are so bold and vibrant that they almost jump off the page. In one, a woman lays draped across the bed as horses leap above her head as dreams merge with reality. In another, miniature (toy) horses jump from bed to bed as the Sella bag, in a shade of hot pink, dominates the frame.
Selecting La Chapelle to bring the bag to life is definitely a bold move but his iconic pop sensibility is the perfect match.
