The KI Kimono

Is it just me or is Hong Kong experiencing its own Polar Vortex these past few days? These freezing temperatures have made me start to think about ways to keep warm while still looking stylish, which leads me to my latest discovery, Italian cashmere label MUUSA Luxury Loungewear.

The brand was founded by Swiss-born artist and creative director Monica Bertini, who grew up in Umbria, Italy, a region known for its luxe cashmere (it’s also the base for Italian luxury knitwear label, Brunello Cucinelli). Her fashion career took her to cities like New York and Shanghai, but it was only last year that she decided to launch her own label of modern yet chic cashmere separates.

The first criteria for Monica was versatility so she went about designing styles that could be worn in various ways. The current collection features 19 pieces ranging from blankets that double as cardigans to wrap dresses, which can look both casual and elegant depending on how you choose to wear it. Because she has used a superfine, lightweight yarn (styles are available in pure cashmere or a silk mix for the summer) you can belt or knot them easily. Best of all, the fabric is  comfortable and doesn’t cling to the body. Since it’s designed with jetsetters in mind, everything is machine washable.

“I wanted people to be able to play with their style. Our pieces have no buttons or zippers and the more tailored styles come in sizes so it fits the body perfectly,” says Monica.

Kimono in green

The latest spring/summer 2014 collection features a classic colour palette (think beige and black) along with more fashion forward shades of pink, red and green. I’m loving the KI, a belted Kimono  and the PO , a poncho skirt dress which can be worn in countless of ways. Another wardrobe essential is the modern wraparound top  which can go from conservative to sexy depending on how you wear it. There are also plenty of accessories from the STO, an ultra-long scarf that double as a dress or belt, or the GU gloves/arm warmers.
