I first spotted Anita Ko’s signature gold studs on Charlize Theron a few years ago, way before Valentino’s Rock Stud collection had taken over the accessories world. They were simple and chic but still had an edge which I loved. I was quite surprised to learn that she was based in Los Angeles, since the city is better known for its relaxed style than fine jewellery.
Anita launched her jewellery collection in 2006 and quickly became a designer to watch thanks to her edgy take on luxury. Her influences run the gamut from the 1940s to the 1980s but her style is purely contemporary often featuring bold motifs that are then transformed into delicate and luxurious pieces made from mirco pave diamonds, 18K gold and semi precious stones.
“I really try to create jewellery that I myself would want to wear. When I started my business I felt the jewellery being offered was very classic, so I started making pieces that I thought were cool and luxurious,” she says.
While designers like Gaia Repossi are about creating a distinctive style, Anita’s designs can match almost any look. Her pieces are varied and can range from a diamond studded lightning bolt and arrow to rings featuring geometric Art Deco motifs. There’s plenty for the classicist such as the diamond serpent bracelets to the modernist who will love her bangle decorated in her signature spikes.
A-list celebrity fans aside (and there are lots including Cameron Diaz, Rachel Zoe and Victoria Beckham) I love the fact that each piece can seamlessly fit in with any girl’s wardrobe all the while making a statement.
