From left to right, clockwise: Celine, Valentino, Sacai and Givenchy
Fashion is an industry that gets way ahead of itself sometimes. The past few weeks we’ve been talking so much about autumn, that we’ve forgotten it’s currently spring, even though the weather tells us otherwise!
To prepare your wardrobes for the new season I am forgoing the usual, long repetitive list of trends and instead giving you my cheat sheet of 10 items you need to have. It’s the quickest way to prep yourself for spring/summer 2014! So without further adieu, top of the list is…
1. A fringed bag
Fringing goes hand-in-hand with the tribal trend but can be so hard to pull off (Cowgirls aren’t chic). So instead try a handbag – everyone has their own version from Celine to Valentino, so there’s plenty to choose from.
2. Slip-on flats
Phoebe Philo was onto something when she created those fur lined Birkenstocks a few season back. Now everyone has their own version, jazzed up with details like multi straps, metallic leathers or prints. Hell, you can even go for classic Birkenstocks if you want.
3. A colourful coat
It may seem odd to wear a coat when its boiling outside, but that’s why we have aircon! Outerwear appeared in almost every collection, with pastels being the colour of choice. Make the look modern by choosing a contemporary silhouette.
Everyone paid tribute to Madeleine Vionnet from Proenza Schouler who covered their pleats with metallic foil for a futuristic twist to Chloe, where long pleated dresses came in sheer fabrics. If you have to own one pleated item, it’s definitely a skirt.
5. Bomber jackets
Anchoring the sports trend are bomber jackets but with a feminine twist. Soften the look with prints such as florals, or fabrics like silk to add volume. We love Sacai’s versions which are feminine and utilitarian at the same time.
6. The logo/slogan tee
Go loud or go home. It’s all about wearing your message on your sleeve, as seen at Kenzo, Dior and Pucci.
Lets be honest, metallics are good anytime of the year, although spring’s are super luxe from Altuzarra’s molten skirts to Lanvin’s Studio 54 lamé. All that glitters is gold!
8. Crop tops
As unflattering as they are, cropped tops are spring’s hero piece. Pair it with high waisted skirts or shorts for a cool urban look (forget Flashdance style tops altogether). And if you dare, expose more skin in bralets as seen at Prada and Versace.
9. The shirtdress
Versatile and easy to wear, go for a crisp cotton button down style . White is timeless as seen at Tod’s while Dior featured a light blue version cut from men’s fabric for a cool twist on a classic.
10. Techno florals
Floral are supercharged this season thanks to fancy effects that make them pop (literally). Forget digital prints – it’s all about new textures and applications from appliqués to beading and embellishments.
