One item that I am perpetually on the lookout for is a crisp, men’s wear inspired white shirt. While everyone does their own version (my favourites include J.Crew’s collaboration with Thomas Mason and Celine), my latest discovery takes men’s tailoring to a whole new luxe level for women.
I first spotted Joe Richards on one of the PR girls working for matchesfashion.com – where it is available exclusively – and I fell in love. She was wearing a simple denim shirt but what really caught my eye were the details from the razor sharp pleats to the lightweight fabric with its laser cut edges. She mentioned that Joe previously worked at brands like Dior Couture, Lanvin and Celine, which explains his minimalist lines and obsession with quality.
Joe Richards launched officially in 2013 and in a short year he has amassed a cult following thanks to his impeccable detailing and cuts. His current spring/summer collection features classic fabrics such as poplin and denim, which have been transformed into sophisticated yet functional dresses, shirts and trousers that every woman will love. There’s a definite androgynous vibe to the collection but the proportions are strictly feminine (he cites style icons like Lee Miller and Greta Garbo as muses).
While items such as his wide-legged trousers are a lesson in tailoring, my absolute favourite piece is the Maxine shirt dress which comes with a contrasting white centre panel, navy cuffs with a grosgrain trim and side split curved hem. The Sinziana white shirt is also destined for my wardrobe with its double layer silk front and sheer panels (it’s made from silk georgette).
Everything is handcrafted in the UK and the prices reflect this with shirts starting at 500 pounds sterling and dresses priced at 600 pounds sterling. Needless to say, this is an item you will treasure and wear over, and over and over again.
