I’ve always been a fan of more minimalist, sculptural jewellery, but New York based brand Bochic couldn’t be further from this. That being said, their intricately detailed and sometimes rock/sometimes gothic creations have a cool appeal that fashionistas will love.
Founded by designer David Joseph, the brand has been making headlines recently thanks to celebrity fans like Michelle Obama and Angelina Jolie. Joseph originally started by reworking vintage jewels and carvings into modern pieces so there is an air of nostalgia that hangs over most of his collections. He says the idea behind his designs is to transport the wearer on a global journey so many of his pieces can be described a modern heirlooms that are inspired by different cultures and travel.

“I try to take only pieces of inspiration from different cultures. There’s just a hint of this, mixed with a hint of that. Sometimes it’s hard to put your finger on so it’s never an overwhelming look. It can be transformed with how it is paired within a wardrobe, making it modern and wearable. Our style is somewhere in the middle of romantic and edgy, with a mix of modern and vintage,” he says.
While the brand started out selling one-of-a-kind pieces they also release core collections every year including the recently launched Conquistador line. Based on armour, conquistadors and medieval heraldry, the designs have a gothic yet modern look so expect dramatic pieces such as full-finger rings covering the hands and motifs such as shields, medallions and crowns executed with a modern twist. Highlights include the hand carved feather angel wing earrings made from jet, champagne diamonds and black gold, and the intricate black gold and diamond shield ring that reminds me of lattice work.
