These days every brand is capitalising on the growing demand for understated luxury, exclusivity and elusiveness. This has been most prevalent in the accessories realm where brands like Celine have built a cult following thanks to their minimalist yet timeless designs that are free from decoration and in-your-face logos.
But long before Phoebe Philo was doing her thing, there was Italian brand Valextra, which has recently opened a boutique in Hong Kong at IFC Mall. Founded in Milan in 1937, Valextra has always been about beautiful and discreet leathergoods since the beginning.
Thanks to their exquisite craftsmanship and beautiful leathers, they’ve attracted a cult following among true connoisseurs who appreciate low key luxury (think Maria Callas and Grace Kelly). While many other luxury brands have evolved into the lifestyle realm, they have decided to stick to their expertise, which is leathergoods. For that alone they are unique.
77 years later and Valextra continues to make its products by hand using the same craftsmanship it has always done. In addition to offering bespoke pieces, each season they add new styles to their growing collections of men’s, women’s, travel and small leather goods. They also offer a range of classics which bear their iconic signatures from the black ink edges and V cut motif to brightly coloured textured leathers – details recognised only by those in the know.
Highlights include the elegant Isis, a structured bag that is available as a crossbody (with a gold chain) or as a clutch featuring a functional yet chic push lock closure. The Boston bag is a sophisticated take on a classic that will last season after season. It’s also worth checking out their luggage as well as small leather goods including the wallets which come with plenty of card slots and other useful details.
