Glove Clutch series
The accessories market has heated up in the past few years thanks to the revival of several storied French maisons that specialise in leather goods. Hot on the heels of Moyant’s arrival earlier this year is Perrin Paris, which recently opened its first boutique at IFC Mall in Hong Kong.
Unlike the others, Perrin Paris’ savoir faire has nothing to do with trunks or handbags. Instead the maison, which was founded in 1893, rose to fame in the 1920s thanks to its beautiful leathers and gloves. In 2007 the company, which is now run by the fourth and fifth generations of the Perrin family, re-launched with a full-scale accessories line including bags, which have become a must-have thanks to their bold designs which playfully reference brand’s heritage.
“Many of our iconic models reference our glove making history. For example, the Cabriolet glove clutch is styled after our classic driving glove. Stitching techniques used in glove making are applied certain handbags. We like to think of our gloves from the past evolving into handbags of the future,” says creative director Sally Perrin.
So while the handbags are made using time honoured techniques, it’s the designs that make them the ultimate arm candy. Take for example the Glove Clutch series which features glove or wrist attachments integrated into the design, so you can carry the bags easily. There are new permutations each season so you can justify buying more than one!
Other more adventurous designs include the architectural ball bag and leather wristlets attached to a gold cuff that fastens around the wrist (it’s perfect for a night out!) For autumn we have our eye on the Mini Baggala, a super chic bucket bag made from calf skin and crocodile. In addition to various leathers, the brand incorporates materials such as lacquered wood for a more contemporary look.
“Its important not to rely too much on the house’ history – we need embody the spirit of the brand but also evolve it and make sure it is relevant to the 21st century rendering the collection into modern conversation pieces,” says Sally.
