Is it just me or have handbags become boring? Over the past few years every brand has adopted a “less is more” approach, taking the fun out of accessorising. Of course there are always exceptions to every rule – and in this case it comes in the form of Sara Battaglia handbags.

Founded by Italian designer Sara Battaglia, who also happens to be the sister of style icon and fashion editor Giovanna Battaglia, her designs are the opposite of classic – think rich leathers, graphic details, plenty of fringe (her signature) and lashings of colour.  In just a few short years the art school graduate has attracted plenty of celebrity fans with her maximalist style.

This week she is launching an her autumn/winter collection at On Pedder which is inspired by Jean Prouvé and 1960s designer Courrèges. Styles include the Teresa with its excessive fringing  and the Jasmine which features a yellow and red braided handle. Customers will also be able to order customised clutches.

We managed to grab five minutes with Sara to talk about handbag essentials. Read on!

You come from a family of creative types – why did you decide to specialise in bags?

I was born with this desire, the passion for fashion is in my DNA. A bag is like a cherry on top of a cake –  it can make you feel unique and cool even when you’re wearing a simple outfit.

How are your bags different?

I like to design the hardware part of the bags – take for example our triangle which is kind of my logo now. I love to play with colours – sometimes in one bag you can find four  or five  colours mixed together. I try  to answer to what I think women want.

What’s the secret to making the perfect handbag?

When I design I always try to be happy, curious and ironic, and try to reflect this in [my work]. When you buy a bag you want it to last forever so its quality is essential.

Does your style icon sister [Giovanna Battaglia]  inspire you as a designer?

She’s a permanent soure of  inspiration for me, but I’m looking also all those glamorous and stylish working women. She is the first to see the collection when is done. I find my inspiration everywhere, in music, in a movie… anything that can attrach my attention during the day and life life.

How important are materials when it comes to your bags? We read some of your bags take 77 hours to make…

You’re talking about the Altaroma, an evening clutch bag, with micro brass flowers all applied and made by hand!

I’m lucky because I’m totally free to invent, following my mood and sensations. My super favorite material is brass, because is more luxury than others metals and because I can create from nothing! It gives more importance to a bag… it’s hard, still, don’t change.  And of course I like leathers, both soft and hard. I like to use them together in many different colors.

What handbag style should every woman have in their closet?

A clutch.

What is your favourite handbag in the world?

The Fendi Peekaboo of Fendi because is original and really really functional.

What makes a handbag truly luxurious in your opinion?

The quality of all materials. Made in Italy is very important.

What do you always carry in your own handbag?

A red lipstick.
