These days it’s nothing new for luxury brands to use exotic skins like python and crocodile in their accessories collections. What is difficult to find however are playful styles that transform this somewhat stuffy and precious material into a look that’s effortless and easy-to-wear.
New York based brand Stalvey fills the gap nicely. The label was founded in 2014 by South Carolina native Jason Stalvey who actually worked in medical field for over a decade. A quest for the perfect alligator duffel bag led him to source the best tannery, supplier and factory. He started off by creating 20 pieces which were quickly snapped up by friends. Soon he added more products and Stalvey was officially up and running.
Stalvey is all about wearable pieces. As such the brand takes everyday items – from gym bags and backpacks to crossbodies and baseball hats – and transforms them into luxed up versions made from the finest exotic skins. While the designs pay homage to streetwear, the final product is uber luxe – bags are lined with supple lambskin while all the hardware is custom made and plated in 18k gold. The majority of the items are hand made in New York.
Stalvey does not create seasonal collections, and instead focuses on a curated selection of items for women and men that fit in with today’s modern lifestyle (they also offer customisation when it comes to colours). Must haves include the silk-lined baseball cap which comes in a range of skins including alligator and the sporty Sun backpack with a lamb lined interior and hand painted edges. The Frances Speedy crossbody is great for travelling and is a mini version of a classic doctor’s bag.
