Favourites include (Left to right): Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larson and Kerry Washington
Is it just us or is the red carpet at the Oscars always the most boring? By the time the Oscars arrive, all the celebs have dressed up a gazillion times so it’s no wonder they can’t be bothered to bring their A game to the final red carpet of the season (Case in point Alicia Vikander, who after dominating every red carpet, decided to wear a yellow parachute by Louis Vuitton?!?!?)
Top trends this year included head-to-toe sequins as well as a focus on the shoulders with plenty of detailed straps taking cues from the spring/summer runways.
Charlize Theron (left) and Lady Gaga (right) also topped our Best Dressed list
Many stars erred on the side of caution with elegant but conservative dresses. Rooney Mara wore a white Givenchy number (snooze) and Julianne Moore looked elegant in her Chanel dress with beaded straps although I was hoping she would go for something more wow. Charlize Theron looked smoking in a stunning red Dior dress with a plunging neckline and thin delicate straps.
Some stars tried to bring a fashion edge to the proceedings including Kerry Washington with her monochrome leather number by Atelier Versace. Lady Gaga’s stylist Brandon Maxwell designed her sculptural jumpsuit which at least looked comfortable. Our favorite was Brie Larson who wore a Gucci dress with just the right amount of details to take it from simple to interesting from the pleated ruffled panels to the embroidered belt. Jennifer Lawrence also surprised us with her choice of a lace gown by Dior, natch – it was a good move.
And the Worst (Left to right): Heidi Klum, Olivia Wilde, Kate Winslet and Alicia Vikander
You can always count on Heidi Klum to wear something ridiculous and this time she looked like a cake topper in her poufy purple Marchesa gown. Cate Blanchett usually does no wrong in our eyes but her seafoam Armani Prive gown looked like a Project Runway outfit. Olivia Wilde bombed in her Valentino couture gown (she should keep those boobs covered next time). Kate Winslet looked like she had been dunked in a vat of oil, limp hair included. Everytime we saw Naomi Watts, visions of Rainbow Brite came to mind.
Here’s to better dresses (and less black jokes) next year.
