Trend Watch: 5 Coverups for the Beach

Kalita maxi dress

Packing for the beach? Ditch the sarong and think outside the box when it comes to covering up this summer. Here are five of our favourite styles this summer:

1. The kimono wrap

There was a time when robes were reserved for the bedroom, but thanks to designers like Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino this style has become a catwalk favourite. Choose from short with batwing arms (which is more traditional) to long and belted for a more dramatic look. While floral prints are a big trend, opt for versions made from breathable fabrics such as silk, cotton or linen with fashionable details such as appliques or lace inserts.

2. Palazzo pants

While it’s easy to throw on a dress, do not underestimate the power of separates. Palazzo pants may have been overshadowed by skinny styles for years, but that’s changing thanks to designers like Rosie Assoulin and Victoria Beckham, who have created silhouettes ranging from slouchy and casual to polished and tailored. We are loving styles covered in stripes which give the illusion of a longer silhouette, or more contemporary cuts such as the high waist.

3. The Shirtdress

The shirt dress is a far more elegant alternative to the sloppy T-shirt dress and is a big trend on the spring/summer 2017 catwalks. Look for styles with voluminous sleeves, cut outs and inserts in contrasting textures or fabrics.  You can’t go wrong with quirky prints like florals, paisley, stripes, polka dots or gingham.

4. The maxi dress

Popular silhouettes this season include the one shoulder and oversized styles which appear conservative from the front, but sexy at the back. Also trending are Boho-inspired flowy dresses from the likes of Vita Kin which feature contrasting ethnic-inspired embroideries. White is the colour to invest in, or go bold with summer’s hottest colour – pink.

5. The Poncho

This chic alternative to the kaftan has been re-envisaged in airy, floaty fabrics such as silk or crepe.  Because the silhouette is so simple, let the details shine. Choose from bold prints, deluxe fringing or threadwork to add texture and richness.
