China’s the next big thing – tell us something that we don’t know! But what’s interesting is that Asian fever has gone beyond the fancy store openings and events, and onto the catwalks. Designers are embracing all things Chinese from its culture and motifs to its tall leggy models. For spring/summer names like John Galliano, Dries Van Noten and Vera Wang used chinoiserie-inspired prints while Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton went whole hog, cheongsams and all.
We’re also seeing more Asian models (case in point, Steven Meisel’s shoot in December Vogue titled “Asia Major” and featuring an all-Asian cast) . For Givenchy’s recent Haute Couture show Riccardo Tisci cast 10 Asian faces including Fei Fei Sun, Liu Wen, Shu Pei Qin and supermodel Du Juan. Ralph Lauren also used a bevy of Asian beauties for his autumn/winter show last week in New York, which surprise surprise, was inspired by China. Luckily his references weren’t quite as overt as Jacobs and included subtle touches such as jade and coral earrings and flashes or red and green.
