Like most women out there I have a thing for online shopping (shopbop.com anyone?) but its starting to feel a bit like groundhog day with the same designers, loose tees and maxi-dresses. Offering me respite from my fashion fatigue is wonderMode. Launched a few months ago, its not so much of an online boutique but more of a fashion marketplace and brand incubator that showcases up and coming fashion talents including graduates from Parsons The New School for Design in New York and Shih Chien Design School in Taiwan.
Not only is the merchandise super cool, but the site also helps designers build brand awarness while providing them support in areas they may not be well-versed in such as PR. It’s all about teaching them how to build a brand while giving us a glimpse of undiscovered talents (you can also peruse each brand’s latest lookbook and recent press).
Now before you start thinking it’s like a glorified Etsy, its not – the brains behind the site is former luxury buyer Aaron Duncan, who handpicks each of the brands with a fine-toothed comb. The site is extensive and covers categories including women’s wear, men’s wear, and accessories such as bags and jewellery.
Some of my favourites include the men’s wear inspired tailored separates from Kal Rieman that remind me a bit of Yves Saint Laurent and Australian designer Lui Hon’s edgy, dark yet draped tops, tunics and very cool Texas leather vest (I want!). Then there is Ryan Jordan – Lady Gaga recently wore one of his pieces thanks to his outlandish yet chic look combining feminine and masculine elements with bold colours. Also check out the edgy jewellery of St. Martin’s graduate Maria Francesca Pepe and Carianne Moore’s futuristic sculptural chokers. Who knows one of these designers may be the future Phoebe Philo.
PS. In August they plan to add free global shipping. Eat your heart out shopbop!
