Burak Uyan’s spring/summer 2012 collection
The past few years have seen a new generation of shoemakers give the old guard a run for their money. Joining the Sandersons, Kirkwoods and Dellals of the shoe world is Paris-based shoe whiz Burak Uyan. I saw some of his designs a few years ago in Paris and was excited to see them again on net-a-porter.
Uyan comes from serious fashion pedigree – born and raised in Germany, he worked at Givenchy and later at Giambattista Valli, where he headed up the design team. He launched his own shoe brand in 2009 and his glamorous designs have caught the eye of celebs like Cameron Diaz and Olivia Wilde, and designers such as Rodarte (he created the shoes for their spring/summer 2012 show).
While he cites Helmut Lang and Rick Owens as inspiration, the look is more architectural than minimalist with a dose of high fashion that women will love. Expect multi-strap sandals, bright colours and a play on different heel shapes, some which resemble lego. Then there are the materials – including exotics like karung, lizard and pony – which are all hand crafted into striking silhouettes for the feet. If you like to make a statement, then this brand is for you.
The autumn collection is about everyday essentials that are transformed into elegant yet statement styles. Booties come in bright colours like mint and purple, while shapes play on shadows and geometric cut outs.
I got a sneak peak of the upcoming spring/summer collection and I am happy to report that it is as lust worthy as fall. Inspired by the colours of tropical butterflies, Uyan plays with different construction such as lattice work and contrasts soft with hard lines. Then there are the finishes – marble prints and metallic engraved varnish. D’Vine!
Must-haves from the current autumn/winter collection.
