Secret Oriental Garden leggings from R.I Carrie Chan.
Being a fashion editor means that I have the privilege of meeting young talented designers, as well as working with them. Local designer Carrie Chan actually started out as a lifestyle writer at the SCMP which is where we first met. As a lover of all things edgy and Vivienne Westwood, she would frequently contribute to my section until her passion for fashion got the better of her.
After winning several prizes at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s New Fashion Collection Award contest she fled to London to undertake a postgraduate degree in fashion design at the University of Westminster in London. Obviously inspired by London’s edgy printers, she went onto work with Alexander McQueen and then with avant-garde duo Boudicca for two years.
After returning to Hong Kong this year, I was thrilled to hear that she launched her first collection, R.I by Carrie, which mainly features fun legwear decorated with digital prints. Developed by Carrie herself, the East-meets-West prints include digitized Chinese paintings and swirls of petals to the more cutesy geometric flowers and butterflies and Geisha girls. The line includes 20 styles of leggings (HK$590 each) and hand, screen-printed tights (HK$220 per pair) ranging in thickness from 30 denier to 80 denier. They are perfect for the cooler weather we are having and make a fashion statement!
