Sparkling necklines on the runways of Marni, Jason Wu, Rodarte and Oscar de la Renta
I am currently in New York and all the new collections are arriving in stores. One trend that’s appearing everywhere is embellished collars. Although it’s not exactly new, the look is taken to new heights with opulent embellishments sewn directly onto necklines. On the catwalk Marni sent out dresses decorated with baroque jewels while Miu Miu’s silk blouses come decorated with pearl studded brooches. The look is definitely edgier than spring, as designers go beyond crystals and experiment with lace, velvet jacquard patterns and large petal-like shapes in autumn shades of red, gold and black.
The best thing about this trend is that it can be applied to almost any item in your wardrobe. Embellished cotton shirts are great for work, while silk shirts can go from day to night. For the colder months opt for a cozy knit sweater with pearl embellishments as seen at H&M. For the evening forgo your jewellery entirely and wear cocktail gowns and dresses with jewel-studded necklines, as spotted at Christian Dior.
When it comes to types of decoration, anything goes – studs are edgy, metal tips are chic, pearls are feminine and sequins are glamorous. Antique jewels a la Lanvin create a vintage-inspired look. Metallic tips are more subtle.
If you are not ready to commit to the trend, play around with detachable collars (if it’s good enough for Karl Lagerfeld…) Just steer clear of Peter Pan and tribal styles – they are so 2011.
