Classics are experiencing a revival in fashion and nowhere is this more obvious than in men’s wear. While women love to experiment, men tend to gravitate towards updated classics (hey, if it ain’t broke…)

For that reason alone, I was excited to discover Grayers, a new men’s wear label born in, believe it or not, Hong Kong’s manufacturing district of Kwung Tong. The brainchild of manufacturer and ex-Ralph Lauren executive Peter Georgiou, the line is all about artisanal pieces that are inspired by tried-and-tested men’s wear classics.

Although Grayer’s was conceived in Asia, its aesthetic is firmly rooted in American and European clothing traditions. Launched in spring/summer 2012, the label has already become a hit with retailers like Nordstrom and Bloomingdales in the US and John Lewis in Britain, thanks to its simple formula of beautifully made heritage pieces infused with a functional, modern twist. Some of the offerings you can expect include great trench coats,   modern slimmed down versions of the classic Aran Isle fisherman’s sweater and knitted wool jackets.

Naturally Georgiou’s expertise in manufacturing was an advantage and helped differentiate the line thanks to its handmade details and exceptional quality. To give the label a cool edge, Georgiou enlisted the talents of his former Ralph Lauren colleague Kenny Thomas who came on board as design director earlier this year.

The current autumn/winter collection, which features around 35 styles, was inspired by a vintage plaid quilt from Scotland. The result is a collection of jackets, sweaters, shirts and trousers that have strong ties to British and American work and military wear, whether its through the colour palette or style. The beauty of the line however is in the details which appear handcrafted despite the fact that most items are mass produced. Everything is designed to live in your wardrobe for years, like all great fashion should.

Who needs Brooklyn when you have Hong Kong?

Peter’s top picks from Grayers Autumn/Winter collection

The Lambswool blazer

“This is our most fashion forward product. It’s made from a knitted fabric, like a sweater, but cut and sewn like a jacket.

University Oxfords

“Our updated version of this classic shirt is lightweight and easy to layer. Each shirt is trimmed with fine cotton muslin.”

Handknit fisherman sweater

“It’s a hand knit sweater made form wool and linen for a much softer feel. This turtleneck version is a classic.”

The Raglan Trench

“This style was created for Lord Raglan and has been worn by men ever since. It’s an iconic staple from the 1960s and is made from a cotton nylon coated fabric.”

The 5 Pocket Corduroy Pant

“This fits beautifully as the fabric is enzyme washed for a soft weathered live-in feel. The cloth is garment dyed so the colours are really rich.”
