The holidays are all about statement jewellery, which is why I thought it was the perfect time to introduce you to jewellery designer Matthew Campbell Laurenza, mastermind behind must-have label MCL.
Born and raised in the US, Matthew travelled around Asia extensively in the early noughties (including Hong Kong where we first met) and was inspired to create his own line of boho luxe jewels. MCL officially launched in 2007 with striking designs that combined his love of colour with his passion for sculpture and art.
Made from sterling silver plated in black rhodium, each piece is hand set with enamel as well as sapphires, rubies and semi-precious gems for a whimiscal look. The collection, which includes earrings, rings and bracelets, is fun, fashionable and chic, and above all, easy to wear. As such his designs have been spotted on celebrities everywhere including trendsetters like Leighton Mesiter, Blake Lively, Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Richie.
While jewels remain his first love, Matthew has recently added new categories to the brand including handbags, men’s accessories and art pieces. Up next are scarves, ties and homewares.
In the meantime however he just launched an exclusive collection of cocktail rings (HK$16,000 to HK$43,500) with Lane Crawford, including several Art Deco inspired styles which I love. Read on to find out more…

What is it that you love so much about jewellery?
It accentuates a person’s personality and fashion.
If you had to sum up MCL in one sentence it would be…
Whimsical and colourful M.C.L creates a thing of beauty for the modern personality.
Your favourite stones are…
Sapphires as they come in every colour except red. When it turns red they call it a ruby.
Fountain of Myth ring
The jewellery brand you admire the most is…
Renee Lalique. He was an innovator and loved to use foreign materials in jewellery as well as lots of colour.
To you, jewellery should be…
An extension of yourself. It should fit your personality and become part of your personal fashion.
Tell us about your latest collection…
For the holidays we have collaborated with Lane Crawford on a collection of cocktail rings. I drew inspiration from organic forms and colours. The choice of green helped influence the decision to make pieces that appear to have been harvested from a fairyland.

What is the best way to wear your jewellery?
I love to see how people style themselves with jewellery. If the person using the jewellery does it right, it is a reflection of her own style. You can see this when you compare celebrities who wear the same thing and they look completely different. If I am going to dress someone, I would recommend layering several pieces as it adds depth and texture to their look.
If a woman had to own just one piece of jewellery it would be…
A fabulous cocktail ring or a chandelier earring that could be broken into earrings of different sizes. Both pieces can be worn with any type of attire – casual, formal, or even to add some oomph to a business suit.
