January is not the most exciting month for shoppers. The sales racks are all picked over and it seems odd to buy anything from the new resort collections when it’s cold outside. All that is left to do is to clean out your wardrobe and make way for your new purchases come March.
While I’m not as anal as some women out there (if only I had the time to colour code my wardrobe a la Oprah) I follow two very important rules all year round. First, when I buy anything new, I need to throw something old out. No exceptions. Secondly, if I have not worn an item for more than a year it has to go. While these may seem simple and logical, it really does keep me from hoarding pieces that I will never use.
Every six months I also make a checklist of styles and trends that I know will carry through to the next season (think of it as your personal hot or not list!) After my wardrobe detox this weekend, I thought it would be fun to share my latest list. Happy Cleaning!
Checks: Accessories or clothes with bold geometric squares fit in with spring’s mod vibe.
Boxy cut tops: If you are daring, go for a cropped style.
Transparency: From plastic straps on heels to tops with sheer panels, it’s all about showing skin in a subtle way.
A tuxedo jacket: If you don’t have one already, this is the season to get one as every designer featured a style on the runway.
Ruffles: Look for styles with sculptural folds on necklines and cuffs.
High-low skirts: Last season’s big trend carries into spring/summer. Just add some tights and you are good to go.
Monotones: Stella McCartney was onto something as black and white continues to be a hot combo come spring.
Envelope clutches: These functional yet chic pouches are essential all year round.
Stripes: No longer confined to sailor tops, stripes are everywhere this season.
Metallics: As spotted at Burberry, summer is all about iridescent sparkle.
Peplums: They’ve had a good run for two seasons, its time to let go ladies.
Herve Leger style dresses: They are Vegas territory now.
Liberty florals: It’s all about Oriental prints instead.
Drop waists: Forget the 1920s, spring pays tribute to the 1960s and 1970s.
Collars: Embellished styles have come and gone. Invest in a statement blouse instead.
