Is it just me or have the British totally taken over the shoe industry? Following Tabitha Simmons’ visit last month, the next name to land on local shores is Charlotte Olympia. The brand is not new to the city – in fact her towering gold trimmed platforms have become a mainstay in most women’s wardrobes here. Today however they reach a new milestone with the opening of its first standalone store in The Landmark.
The 900 square foot space is inspired by old Hollywood glamour with features including the brand’s signature gold spider web on the glass entrance . Inside plush pink furnishings clash with leopard print Eames style seating.
Fans will be able to buy the designer’s complete range of shoes and accessories, including the upcoming autumn/winter collection which ironically is inspired by Chinese culture (Charlotte denies that it was pre-planned to coincide with the opening!) While many of the styles border on kitsch, they are still modern and wearable thanks to Dellal’s signature tongue-in-cheek glamour.
Highlights include the Great Wedge featuring a sky-high red lacquer wedge and the Ming Vase heels which are covered in traditional blue and white Porcelain prints. It’s all about the details with Chinese knots, dragon fly appliqués and sequins covering velvet slippers and silk covered pumps. What I’m loving more than the shoes are the bags including fan-shaped minaudieres, lantern bags adorned with silk tassels and take away boxes which are transformed into bags with Lucite handles.
The new store will also see a host of new arrivals in the coming months including her recently launched 9 to 5 collection , which debuts in June. It features a range of classic silhouettes available in three heel heights – 55mm, 75mm and 90mm with the idea that you can wear them anytime and anywhere. There are stilettos, block and kitten heels, each one spiced up with modern details be it be PVC inserts, toe caps or broguing. Each pair comes in discrete briefcase-inspired shoebox and with matching coloured stockings – a classic Dellal twist.
Also coming soon is her first luxury leather handbag line, which offers classic vintage inspired styles that are designed to last more than just one season. Named after Hollywood greats like Bogart, Gable and Astaire, the collection features four silhouettes made from leather, croc or leopard calf skin. Each bag boasts gold leather linings, scallop trims, a gold plated base and hardware, and a mirrored comb for lipstick touchups. Some styles even come with a pair of matching gloves (because we all need a bit of glamour in our daily lives).
