Marques Almeida x matchesfashion.com capsule collection
London has so many talented designers, but one of my favourites as of late are Portuguese design duo Paulo Almeida and Marta Marques, founders of hip label Marques Almeida.
After completing their MA in Fashion at Central Saint Martins, they made their debut at London Fashion Week in time for the autumn/winter 2011 season and have since secured NEWGEN sponsorship from the British Fashion Council/Topshop while being nominated at last year’s British Fashion Awards.
What makes their designs stand apart however is that they are all about an attitude with pieces that look effortless yet lived in thanks to details such as distressed fabrics, raw seams and frayed edges. In particular, editors (including yours truly) have been fawning over their denim separates which are made from a soft twill for a look that is part street, part couture. Featuring utilitarian jackets, jeans and T-shirt dresses their work is a bit of a throwback to the 1990s (funnily, autumn/winter 2014 is called Nineties-Millenium) which is probably why I love it!
Most recently, they created an exclusive capsule collection for matchesfashion.com featuring urban silhouettes made from their iconic frayed denim in a cool shade of grey. I am eyeing the cropped denim jacket and the sleeveless dress with an asymmetric hem – understated yet edgy. If you are after basics then its worth investing in one of the T-shirts.
