Klaxon earrings (left) and Stripe ring (right)
I discovered London based jeweller Maria Black during a recent trip to Copenhagen. I hadn’t heard of the brand before but I kept seeing her dainty yet edgy designs in all the cool boutiques around town. There was something alluring in her use of geometric shapes, dull metals and unusual textures – so much so that I ended up buying many of her pieces for myself. I have since discovered that she has a big fan base including the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Rihanna, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Lady Gaga.
Like most Scandinavian designers, Maria’s designs are minimalist, but she adds an artistic touch through details like repeated patterns, cool finishes or the way you wear a piece. Her creations have been dubbed as “lego for fashionistas” because many styles are interchangeable – for example, earrings can be worn alone or matched with other pairs while rings can adorn fingers or toes. The final look is delicate yet edgy and never fussy or overdone. Everything is made from silver plated in oxidised gold or silver for cool yet contemporary look.

While she adds new styles each season she has plenty of classics including my favourite, the Monocle earring, which is made up of a spinning circle on one end, and an ear post. Both are connected by a delicate gold chain which you thread through the ear hole. Her autumn/winter collection includes new must-haves like the Klaxon bar earrings while the striped rings have a cool texture. We also love the Sax and Vixen necklaces which are art deco in spirit but super modern.
