Watch out Michael Kors, Tory Burch is fast on her way to conquering China!
Last night the stylish designer unveiled her latest coup in the form of a super chic flagship boutique, located in Shanghai’s Jing-An Kerry Centre. To celebrate, Tory hosted a private dinner at the Peninsula Hotel where they built and recreated, down to every last detail, the dining room at her South Hampton Home. Everything from the food (by New York’s Fat Radish) and entertainment (a performance by dance sensation Lil Buck) was quintessential New York.
It was definitely the right occasion to go all out. While it’s not Tory’s first boutique in China, it’s certainly the biggest covering two storeys and 9,645 square feet. The interiors remind me of a grand yet intimate New York residence complete with marble hallways, elegant drapes and even a fireplace. There are personal touches everywhere including photographs of Tory’s parents. There are areas dedicated to accessories and eveningwear, plus a private VIP suite where you can do some major damage.
While the boutique is home to all her collections ranging from ready-to-wear and homewares (including exclusive colours and styles) it also stocks a 22-piece limited-edition collection which was created exclusively for China. The style is more Tory than chinoiserie, with timeless shapes made modern thanks to luxe fabrics like silk georgette, leather and shearling. Everyday must-haves include quilted wrap skirt, fur pullover and the very on-trend lambswool bomber jacket.
I also managed to pick up a copy of Tory’s first ever book, Tory Burch In Colour, which is a feast for the senses. Each chapter is dedicated to a colour that inspires her and her work, and includes images of her own collections and travels, the works of creatives she admires plus up close and personal interviews. All proceeds from the sale of the book go directly to the Tory Burch Foundation.
New York doesn’t seem so far away after all.
