Chic coats by (from left to right): Valentino, Bottega Veneta, Prada and Alexander McQueen

There are so many different coat styles this season, it will make your head will spin.  Here are our top 5 picks to invest in.

1. Military

Military inspired jackets are a big trend every winter. Aside from a tailored army coat (see Haider Ackermann), opt for a more ornate style that brings to mind military regalia. It’ s all about a fitted silhouette with sharp shoulders and decorated with epaulettes, buttons, gold rope and bows.

2. Leopard print

Another perennial favourite, leopard print covered fur coats at Prada and a leather trimmed tailored style at Bottega Veneta. Up your game by opting for unexpected hues like red or grey as spotted at Dior.

3. Shearling

The bigger and fluffier the coat is, the better. If you go oversized, make sure the shape is more tailored as seen as Celine. Or forget a coat altogether and opt for a  cape ( Maison Martin Margiela) or oversized jumper-come-jacket with zippered pockets (Chloe) instead.

4. Puffa

This fashion no-no is now a must-have thanks to Demna Gvasalia of Vetements and Balenciaga. Choose styles in vibrant colours as seen at Marques Almedia or dramatic XXL versions. McQueen’s come decorated with flowers and lined in marabou feathers.

5. High Shine

What better way to make a statement than with a bit of sparkle? Dries Van Noten opted for a splattering of sequins on his coats while vinyl and patent leather also add a dark sexy edge to Isabel Marant and Loewe’s cover-ups. Go sexy or go home.
