Mini Basket Bucket and Bellows Crossbody (right) by Cafune
If you thought Stella McCartney had the monopoly on stylish vegan leather handbags then think again. A host of new brands have launched collections proving that this sustainable fabric can be used in fresh and fun ways (while benefitting more than just the environment…but more on that later!)
Local accessories brand Cafune first made waves when it launched 2015 thanks to its affordable yet well-designed handbags. Its latest spring/summer 2018 collection charters new territory by introducing handwoven vegan leather for the first time. Part artisanal, part luxe, there are two specific fabrics – a minimalist white “pearl” or a funky black and white tartan weave. Both appear on styles including a crossbody and bucket bag, but we have our eye on the white pearl carryall which is perfect for the summer.

Sonnet + Rose is another name that caught our eye (and not only because the brand’s co-founder and creative director Sanam Daswani was raised in Hong Kong). Aside from offering stylish yet accessibly-priced vegan handbags, the brand follows in the socially-conscious footsteps of companies like Toms to support a greater need. In this case, for every bag purchased, the company will donate a new backpack to a child from an underserved community in India.
Although the line was created to help fund and support a bigger initiative, the bags are great additions to any wardrobe. Designed to be seasonless, the Day bags reference essential shapes such as the tote and carryall, but are funked up with snakeskin prints and gold detailing while still being practical (think multiple compartments and detachable straps). The Play category is more glam with eye-catching accents such as chunky chain straps and burnished studs.
